Centre Volunteers in Medicine was organized in February 2001 and opened its doors in March 2003. Centre County Pennsylvania is home to approximately 23,000 people living below the federal poverty level (Source: 2000 Census) of which approximately 11,000 are without health insurance. Centre County also contains 10 townships and boroughs that are federally designated as health professional shortage areas (HPSA) and 12 townships and boroughs that meet the federal criteria for a medically underserved area (MUA). The mission of Centre Volunteers in Medicine is to improve the health and wellness of those uninsured or under-insured Centre County residents who are living at or below federal poverty guidelines.
